Mesa's northeast neighborhoods near Usery Mountain Regional Park and the Tonto National Forest have the highest bark scorpion density in the city. Red Mountain Ranch, Las Sendas, and Eastmark sit directly adjacent to undeveloped desert land. Even central Mesa sees regular scorpion activity from mature desert landscaping and block wall corridors.

American cockroaches migrate into homes when summer heat makes outdoor conditions unbearable, and again when monsoon flooding displaces them from underground spaces. Older neighborhoods near downtown Mesa see the highest cockroach pressure.

Roof rats are common in Mesa's established neighborhoods with mature palm trees and citrus. They enter attics and wall voids through gaps in rooflines and eaves. Central and west Mesa's older neighborhoods with mature landscaping see the highest roof rat pressure. They carry hantavirus and other pathogens.

Mesa's irrigated landscaping and parks create ideal fire ant habitat throughout the city. Colonies migrate underground during dry pre-monsoon heat, then explosively resurface when monsoon rains arrive. Mesa's extensive park system and HOA common areas are especially prone to fire ant infestations.

Western black widows are common throughout Mesa, nesting in block walls, under patio furniture, in garage corners, and around irrigation equipment. Mesa's extensive block wall network creates abundant harborage throughout the city. They are most active at night and rarely seen during the day.
