Trigonidiid ground crickets are a specialized family of very small crickets distinguished by their sickle-shaped ovipositor (egg-laying structure) and preference for moist microhabitats. In Arizona, they are found primarily along riparian corridors, irrigated agricultural areas, and in moist garden environments. They are among the smallest crickets in the state, rarely exceeding half an inch in length. Males produce very high-pitched calls that are often at the upper limit of human hearing. Trigonidiid crickets are not household pests and are rarely encountered by most Arizona residents. They are, however, important prey items for small lizards, spiders, and insectivorous birds in riparian ecosystems. Their presence is generally an indicator of healthy moisture levels in desert habitats.
