The spitting spider (Scytodes thoracica) is one of the most unusual spiders in Arizona. It captures prey by spitting a venomous, sticky silk from its fangs at speeds up to 30 meters per second, pinning the prey to the surface before biting it. The spider's oversized cephalothorax houses the enlarged venom/silk glands responsible for this unique hunting method. Spitting spiders are small (1/4–3/8 inch), slow-moving, and have a distinctive domed, spotted cephalothorax. They are found in sheltered indoor locations — under furniture, in closets, and in undisturbed corners — where they hunt other small spiders and insects at night. Spitting spiders are completely harmless to humans and are actually beneficial, as they prey on other spiders including sac spiders.
