Orb-weaver spiders (family Araneidae) are the classic web-spinning spiders that build the large, circular, symmetrical webs familiar to most people. Arizona is home to dozens of orb-weaver species, ranging from small garden spiders to large, colorful species with bodies over 1 inch long. Orb-weavers are most conspicuous in late summer and fall when females reach their maximum size and their webs are most elaborate. They build their webs in gardens, between shrubs, across pathways, and around outdoor lighting where flying insects are abundant. Most orb-weavers rebuild their web each night, consuming the old silk and spinning a fresh web. They are completely harmless to humans — their venom is designed to immobilize insects and has no significant effect on humans. Orb-weavers are among the most beneficial spiders in Arizona, consuming enormous numbers of flying pest insects.
