Long-jawed orb-weavers (genus Tetragnatha, family Tetragnathidae) are slender, elongated spiders found near water throughout Arizona — along streams, rivers, irrigation canals, and around ponds and lakes. They are identified by their elongated body, long legs, and notably large chelicerae (jaws) that project forward prominently. Adults are typically 1/4–1/2 inch in body length with legs that extend the total length to over an inch. Long-jawed orb-weavers build horizontal or slightly tilted orb webs over or near water surfaces, where they catch aquatic insects emerging from the water. When threatened, they stretch their legs forward and backward along a stem or twig, becoming remarkably well camouflaged. They are completely harmless and are found wherever there is permanent or seasonal water in Arizona.
