June beetles (genus Phyllophaga, family Scarabaeidae) are a large and diverse group of scarab beetles with over 150 species in North America. In Arizona, several species are common, particularly in areas with irrigated lawns, gardens, and agricultural land. Adults are large (3/4–1 inch), robust, reddish-brown to dark brown beetles that are strongly attracted to lights on warm summer nights — they are the large, buzzing beetles that crash into porch lights and windows from May through July. Adults feed on tree foliage but cause relatively minor damage. The real damage is done by the larvae: large, C-shaped white grubs (up to 1.5 inches) that live in the soil and feed voraciously on the roots of grasses, garden plants, vegetables, and ornamentals. Larvae spend one to three years underground, depending on the species, before pupating and emerging as adults. In lawns, grub feeding severs grass roots, causing irregular brown patches that pull up like a loose carpet. In gardens, grubs can destroy the root systems of vegetables and ornamental plants. Grub infestations also attract secondary predators — skunks, raccoons, and birds will dig up lawns to feed on grubs, causing additional damage.
