The Cigarette Beetle (Lasioderma serricorne) is one of the most destructive and broadly polyphagous stored-product beetles in the world. Despite its name, it infests far more than tobacco — it attacks an extraordinarily wide range of stored products including dried spices, herbs, dried flowers, pet food, dry dog and cat food, birdseed, dried mushrooms, dried fish, dried meat, nuts, chocolate, coffee, books, herbarium specimens, and even pharmaceutical products. Adults are small (1/16–1/8 inch), oval to nearly round, reddish-brown to light brown, with a distinctively humped thorax that partially conceals the head when viewed from above — giving them a characteristic hunched appearance. The wing covers are smooth (not striated). Adults are strong fliers and are attracted to light. Larvae are small, curved, creamy-white grubs that feed inside food products. The Cigarette Beetle is particularly well-adapted to warm, dry conditions and thrives in Arizona's desert climate, completing a generation in as little as 6 weeks in warm conditions. It is a significant pest in Arizona homes, particularly in pantries with large quantities of spices, dried herbs, or pet food.
