Acrobat ants (genus Crematogaster) get their distinctive name from their habit of raising their heart-shaped abdomen up over their thorax and head when disturbed — a unique and easily recognizable behavior. Workers are small to medium-sized, light brown to black, and the heart-shaped (cordate) abdomen is the key identification feature. They nest in moist or decayed wood, tree cavities, and occasionally in foam insulation or wall voids inside structures. Acrobat ants are omnivores, feeding on sweets and proteins, and they tend aphids and scale insects for honeydew. They can strip insulation from electrical wires when nesting inside walls, creating a fire hazard.
