Unlike many insects that die off or migrate when temperatures drop, bark scorpions are remarkably cold-tolerant and simply seek out insulated hiding spots to wait out the cooler months. In Phoenix and the surrounding desert communities, winter temperatures rarely get cold enough to kill scorpions outright — and the mild daytime highs mean scorpions can still be active on warm winter afternoons and evenings. If you find a scorpion in your home in December or January, it is not a fluke.

In winter, bark scorpions congregate in groups — sometimes dozens together — in protected harborage areas that retain heat. Common winter hiding spots include inside block wall voids, under the bark of palm trees and other desert trees, in wood piles and debris, inside attic insulation, in wall voids near water heaters and HVAC equipment, and deep in rock piles and landscape boulders. This congregating behavior is actually useful for pest control: treating known harborage areas in winter can eliminate multiple scorpions at once, before they disperse in spring. UV blacklight inspections on mild winter nights can reveal these congregation sites.
