Rodents are secretive by nature — they avoid humans, stay hidden during the day, and can establish a significant presence in your home before you see a single animal. By the time you spot a live rodent, the infestation is usually well established. Learning to recognize the early signs is the key to catching a rodent problem before it becomes a major one. The three most common rodents in Arizona homes are the roof rat (Rattus rattus), the pack rat or woodrat (Neotoma species), and the house mouse (Mus musculus). Each leaves slightly different signs, but all share the basics: droppings, gnaw marks, grease marks, and nesting material.

Droppings are the most reliable indicator. Roof rat droppings are about half an inch long, dark, and spindle-shaped with pointed ends. House mouse droppings are smaller — about a quarter inch — and rod-shaped. Pack rat droppings are similar in size to roof rat droppings but often found in large piles near their nest. Fresh droppings are dark and moist; older droppings are gray and crumbly. Grease marks (rub marks) are dark smears left by rodents repeatedly traveling the same path along walls, pipes, and beams — their fur deposits oils and dirt on surfaces they contact. Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, wiring, and pipes are another key sign. Roof rats in particular gnaw on electrical wiring in attics, creating a serious fire hazard.

Sounds are often the first sign homeowners notice: scratching, scurrying, and gnawing sounds in the attic, walls, or ceiling, typically at night. Roof rats are almost exclusively attic dwellers in Arizona — if you hear activity above your ceiling, roof rats are the most likely culprit. Pack rats build large stick nests in garages, under vehicles, and in dense vegetation. House mice nest in insulation, inside appliances, and in wall voids.
