Rodent Control in Arizona: Roof Rats, Norway Rats, and Pack Rats
Arizona is home to four rodent species that commonly invade homes: roof rats (Rattus rattus), Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), house mice (Mus musculus), and pack rats (Neotoma spp.). Roof rats are the most common urban pest rodent in the Phoenix metro — they nest in attics, palm trees, and block walls, and they travel along utility lines and fence tops to access homes. Pack rats, also called woodrats, build large stick nests in desert landscaping and under vehicles. All four species can transmit disease, contaminate food, and cause serious structural damage by gnawing through wiring, insulation, and wood.
Effective rodent control in Arizona requires exclusion first, then elimination. A licensed pest control technician will inspect the exterior of your home for entry points — gaps around pipes, damaged roof vents, open weep holes, and spaces under garage doors — and seal them with hardware cloth, steel wool, or caulk. Snap traps and tamper-resistant bait stations are then placed in attics, crawl spaces, and along rodent travel routes. Glue boards are useful for monitoring but are not a primary control tool. Rodenticide bait blocks are effective for outdoor populations but must be placed in locked, tamper-resistant stations to protect children, pets, and non-target wildlife.
Rodent activity in Arizona peaks in fall and winter as temperatures drop and food sources become scarce. Signs of an active infestation include droppings (roof rat droppings are banana-shaped, 12–13mm long), gnaw marks on wood and wiring, greasy rub marks along walls, and scratching sounds in the attic at night. Pest Control Bros LLC provides rodent inspection, exclusion, and elimination services throughout Maricopa, Chandler, Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, and Casa Grande. Call (520) 424-5244 for a free inspection.
