The foreign grain beetle (Ahasverus advena) is an unusual pantry pest because it does not actually eat grain — it feeds on the mold and fungi that grow on grain and other organic materials in damp conditions. Finding foreign grain beetles in your Arizona home is therefore a sign of a moisture problem, not just a pantry pest problem. Adults are tiny (1.5–2mm), reddish-brown beetles with two distinctive knob-like projections on the front corners of the thorax. They infest newly constructed homes (where green lumber and drywall compound provide mold growth), damp basements, and pantries with moisture issues. They can also be found in bird nests, rodent nests, and compost.

Controlling foreign grain beetles in Arizona requires addressing the underlying moisture problem, not just treating the beetles. Identify and fix any water leaks, condensation issues, or ventilation problems that are creating damp conditions. In new construction, foreign grain beetles often disappear on their own once the building dries out — typically within 1–2 years. In established homes, check for leaky pipes under sinks, poor pantry ventilation, and moisture intrusion from the exterior.
