Fact 1: The bark scorpion is the only truly dangerous scorpion in Arizona. Arizona has more than 60 scorpion species, but only one — the bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus) — has venom potent enough to cause serious medical complications. The other species you might encounter, including the giant desert hairy scorpion and the striped tail scorpion, deliver stings comparable to a bee sting: painful but not dangerous to healthy adults. Bark scorpions are small (1 to 3 inches), yellowish-tan, and slender — and they are the ones you need to worry about. Fact 2: They are exceptional climbers. Unlike most scorpions, bark scorpions can climb smooth vertical surfaces including stucco, glass, and painted walls. This is why they end up in beds, on ceilings, and inside cabinets — they do not need a gap at floor level to get in.
Fact 3: They glow under UV light. All scorpions fluoresce bright blue-green under ultraviolet (blacklight) illumination due to compounds in their exoskeleton. A $10 UV flashlight from a hardware store is the most effective tool for finding scorpions at night. Walk your yard and the perimeter of your home after dark with a UV light and you will quickly see how many are present. Fact 4: They are social — sort of. Bark scorpions are the only scorpion species known to congregate in groups, particularly in winter. Finding one scorpion in your home almost always means there are more nearby. Fact 5: Their venom is a neurotoxin, not a tissue-destroying toxin. Bark scorpion venom causes neurological symptoms — intense pain, numbness, tingling, muscle twitching, difficulty swallowing — rather than the local tissue damage caused by some other venomous animals. This is why symptoms can be severe even though the sting site itself may not look alarming.
Knowing these facts changes how you approach scorpion control. Climbing ability means you need to seal high entry points, not just floor-level gaps. UV detection means you can monitor your property yourself between professional treatments. Congregating behavior means one sighting warrants a thorough inspection.
