Fire ants have established themselves across Arizona, building mounds in yards, parks, and agricultural areas. Their painful stings can trigger severe allergic reactions, and their mounds damage lawns and irrigation systems. Learn how to identify fire ant mounds, treat them effectively, and prevent reinfestation.
Two fire ant species are established in Arizona: the southern fire ant (Solenopsis xyloni), a native species found throughout the state, and the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), an invasive species from South America that has spread into southern and central Arizona. Both species build characteristic dome-shaped mounds in open, sunny areas — lawns, parks, roadsides, and agricultural fields. The red imported fire ant is the more aggressive and medically significant species. Fire ant mounds in Arizona are typically 6 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches in diameter, with no visible entrance hole at the top (fire ants enter and exit through underground tunnels). Disturbing a mound triggers an immediate, coordinated defensive response — hundreds of workers swarm out and sting anything in contact with the mound.
The Characteristic Fire Ant Sting Sign
A white pustule forms at the sting site within 24 hours. This is unique to fire ant stings and is the most reliable field identification. Do not pop the pustule — it increases infection risk.
Fire ant stings cause an immediate burning sensation (hence the name) followed by the formation of a white pustule at the sting site within 24 hours. These pustules are characteristic of fire ant stings and distinguish them from other insect stings. For most people, the reaction is localized — pain, swelling, and itching that resolves in a few days. However, approximately 1 to 2 percent of people develop severe systemic allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to fire ant venom, which can be life-threatening. In Arizona, fire ant activity peaks in spring and fall when temperatures are moderate. During summer heat, colonies move deeper underground and mound activity decreases. After monsoon rains, mounds become very active as colonies repair flood damage and expand.
Treatment: Two-Step Method
Step 1 — Broadcast Bait
Amdro or Extinguish Plus
- Spread over entire yard
- Workers carry it back to colony
- Kills queen — eliminates entire colony
- Takes 2–4 weeks to work
Step 2 — Mound Treatment
Contact Insecticide
- Applied directly to visible mounds
- Faster knockdown (24–48 hrs)
- May not reach the queen
- Best used alongside broadcast bait
The most effective fire ant treatment combines a broadcast bait application with individual mound treatments. Broadcast bait (such as Amdro or Extinguish Plus) is spread over the entire yard and carried back to the colony by foraging workers — it is slow-acting (2 to 4 weeks) but eliminates entire colonies including the queen. Individual mound treatments using contact insecticides or boiling water provide faster knockdown of visible mounds but may not eliminate the queen. For large infestations or recurring problems, professional treatment is the most reliable option. Prevention includes maintaining a healthy, dense lawn, addressing moisture issues, and treating new mounds promptly before they grow.
