If you have noticed more cockroaches in your Phoenix home during July, August, and September, monsoon season is the reason. Arizona's summer monsoon brings two things cockroaches love above all else: moisture and warmth. The combination of high humidity, standing water, and temperatures that stay above 80 degrees even at night creates ideal breeding and foraging conditions for every cockroach species common to the Phoenix area. American cockroaches — the large, reddish-brown palmetto bugs — are particularly responsive to monsoon moisture. They live in sewer systems, storm drains, and utility voids, and the surge of water through these systems during monsoon storms drives them up and out through drains, utility penetrations, and foundation gaps.
German cockroaches, the small tan species that infest kitchens and bathrooms, also surge during monsoon season — but for a different reason. The increased humidity reduces the desiccation stress that normally limits their populations in Arizona's dry climate. German roaches thrive in humidity above 50 percent, and monsoon season regularly pushes indoor humidity to that level in homes without aggressive air conditioning. Outdoor populations of Turkestan cockroaches, which live in block wall voids and irrigation boxes, also explode during monsoon season as moisture activates their food sources and accelerates reproduction. These outdoor roaches frequently enter homes through gaps around doors, windows, and utility penetrations.
Defending your home during monsoon season requires both exclusion and treatment. Seal gaps under doors and around utility penetrations before the monsoon arrives in July. Fix any plumbing leaks that increase indoor humidity. Apply a residual perimeter treatment before the first monsoon rains — treating after the rains wash away your barrier is playing catch-up.
