The cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne) is a small (2–3mm), oval, reddish-brown beetle that infests an impressive range of products in Arizona homes. Despite its name, it is most commonly found in spice racks — paprika, chili powder, dried peppers, and curry powder are favorite targets. It also infests dried herbs, flour, cereals, dried fruit, pet food, and tobacco products. The cigarette beetle can fly and is attracted to light, which helps it spread through a home. Larvae are the damaging stage, boring into food products and leaving behind frass. The cigarette beetle is closely related to the drugstore beetle and the two are often confused.

Controlling cigarette beetles in Arizona starts with the spice rack, which is often overlooked during pantry cleanouts. Check every spice jar, especially paprika, chili powder, and dried herbs — these are the most common infestation sources. Discard infested items and vacuum the spice rack thoroughly. Transfer all spices to airtight glass containers. Check the pantry for other infested items and discard them. Pheromone traps are available for cigarette beetles and are useful for monitoring adult populations. Because cigarette beetles can fly, check adjacent rooms and cabinets for adults.

Cigarette beetles thrive in Arizona's warm climate and can complete their life cycle in as little as 6–8 weeks at summer temperatures. Infestations often originate in old spice jars that have been in the pantry for years — spices lose their potency but remain attractive to beetles. If you find cigarette beetles in multiple locations or in rooms outside the kitchen, a professional inspection is recommended. Pest Control Bros LLC provides pantry pest control throughout Maricopa, Chandler, Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, and Casa Grande. Call (520) 424-5244.
