Boxelder Bugs in Arizona: Why They Invade Homes & How to Stop Them

No Bite, No Sting, No Structural Damage

Boxelder bugs are a nuisance pest only. They do not bite, sting, or damage structures. The main problems are their unpleasant odor when crushed and the reddish-brown stains their feces leave on surfaces.

Every fall, boxelder bugs swarm the sunny sides of Arizona homes by the hundreds, looking for warm places to overwinter. They don't bite, sting, or cause structural damage — but the sheer numbers are alarming and they stain surfaces with their feces. Learn why they come, where they hide, and the most effective ways to keep them out.

Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are one of Arizona's most recognizable fall invaders. Flat, oval, and about 1/2 inch long, they are black with distinctive red or orange markings along the edges of their wings and thorax — three red stripes behind the head and red wing veins. Nymphs (immature bugs) are bright red and become increasingly black as they mature. They are true bugs (Order Hemiptera) and feed primarily on the seeds of boxelder trees (Acer negundo), as well as maple and ash trees. In Arizona, boxelder trees are commonly planted as shade trees in residential neighborhoods, parks, and along streets — which is why boxelder bug populations can be high in suburban areas. The life cycle is straightforward: adults overwinter in protected locations (inside walls, under bark, in leaf litter), emerge in spring to feed and reproduce on host trees, and produce one to two generations per year. In late summer and fall, as temperatures drop, adults aggregate in large numbers on the sunny (south and west-facing) sides of buildings, fences, and rocks, seeking warmth. This aggregation behavior — hundreds or thousands of bugs clustering on exterior walls — is what alarms homeowners. They enter homes through gaps around windows, doors, utility penetrations, and any crack or crevice they can find. Once inside, they overwinter in wall voids, attics, and other protected spaces.

Arizona Boxelder Bug Seasonal Calendar

Spring (Mar–Apr)

Overwintering adults emerge, move outdoors to feed and reproduce

Summer (May–Aug)

Active feeding on boxelder seeds; nymphs developing

Fall (Sep–Nov)

Peak aggregation on sunny walls; entering homes to overwinter

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Dormant in wall voids, attics, and protected spaces

Boxelder bugs are a nuisance pest, not a destructive one. They do not bite, sting, or cause structural damage. They do not reproduce indoors. They do not infest food. However, they do have two genuinely problematic traits. First, they produce a pungent, unpleasant odor when crushed — so the instinct to squash them makes the problem worse. Second, their feces leave reddish-brown stains on curtains, upholstery, walls, and other surfaces that can be difficult to remove. Large numbers of dead bugs inside walls can also attract other pests (carpet beetles, dermestid beetles) that feed on insect remains. In Arizona, boxelder bug season runs from late September through November, with peak aggregation in October. Warm fall days following cool nights trigger the most intense aggregation behavior. By December, most bugs have found overwintering sites and activity drops off. In spring (March–April), overwintering adults become active again and move back outdoors to feed and reproduce. This spring emergence — bugs appearing inside the home seemingly from nowhere — is often more alarming to homeowners than the fall aggregation.

How to Stop Them

The most effective long-term strategy for boxelder bugs is exclusion — sealing the entry points they use to get inside. Inspect and seal gaps around windows, doors, utility penetrations, and where siding meets the foundation. Install door sweeps and repair damaged window screens. Caulk gaps around pipes, conduit, and wiring where they enter the home. This work is best done in late summer before aggregation begins. For the fall aggregation on exterior walls, a residual insecticide spray (bifenthrin, permethrin, or lambda-cyhalothrin) applied to the exterior walls, foundation, and around entry points provides effective knockdown and residual control. Spray on a warm day when bugs are active and visible. Repeat applications may be needed during peak season. Insecticidal soap spray kills bugs on contact but has no residual effect. For bugs that have already entered the home, vacuuming is the safest removal method — it avoids the staining and odor from crushing. Dispose of the vacuum bag or canister contents outside immediately. Do not use insecticide sprays inside the home — they will not prevent more bugs from entering and will leave dead bugs in wall voids. The most permanent solution is to remove or replace boxelder trees on the property. Female boxelder trees (seed-bearing) are the primary host — replacing them with male trees or other species eliminates the food source that sustains the local population. This is a significant undertaking but provides lasting relief.
